How are Websites Built?
Managed Content Webs use a project schedule with check-in points (milestones) for signoff with our clients. There are several stages a website moves through:
- planning
- design
- construction
- maintenance
- marketing
Moving Between Stages
At each of the stages there are check-in points established to ensure everything is progressing to plan and importantly to our clients satisfaction.
These are important points of sign-off as moving backwards through the stages (whilst possible) will increase the time and potentially costs for the website build.
This makes sense if you consider building a house:
- Changing the colour of the hallway walls is cheap and quick.
- Adding a few square meters to the lounge room after the plastering and roof is complete will be expensive.
We make sure you're completely happy with each stage before beginning the next stage.
Planning
Although it is tempting to skip planning it is the step most vital for the long-term success of any website. At the very least you should answer the question, “What is the purpose of my website?”
These questions may help you clarify your website's purpose and objectives:
- What problem does the website solve?
- How will you know if your site is successful?
- What responses would you like to your site?
Even if you already have a website, any time spent clarifying "purpose" is a sound investment.

Design
The design stage is concerned with the “look” and features of the website. The design includes such things as the colours used, how the text appears and how the menus work.
Typically this stage will involve some back and forth as changes are made to the design by our Graphic Designers and your feedback sought.
Construction

The building of the website translates the design of the website into a “template” that can be viewed on the internet. The Content Management Software (CMS) is then “bolted on” to the template to create your updateable website.
Building your website typically includes the following steps:
- The template is constructed from the design using the latest technologies to optimise size and speed.
- The template is tested and optimised for most popular browsers.
- The CMS software is attached to the template and tested.
- Any EXTRA features that are requested are added.
As with the design there may be some back and forth until you are completely happy with your website. From any time now you can choose to make your new site public.
